Journal #1

In the young adult book, Eleanor and Park, we discover our two main characters reside in Omaha, Nebraska. First, we discover that Park is Korean due to his peers on the bus. Park is also an introvert. He like to keep to himself and listen to his music. Park lives with his mom and dad and has a younger brother. His younger brother, Josh is much bigger than Park. Park’s dad often compares him to Park. Park’s family is very traditional and lives a comfortable life. Park is a fan of comics and loves to read them on the bus. Further on in the story, we find out that Park is a very genuine and compassionate person. Eleanor on the other hand lives a life a hardship. Her family is considered poor and her living conditions at home are not like Park. She lives with her mom, stepdad and three siblings. Her and her three siblings all share one room. We find out in the book that Eleanor is recently back from an incident that has happened with Richie and her. Before Eleanor left, Ben, Maisie, and Mouse hated Richie with a passion. When she came back, she was astounded to find out that her younger siblings have gotten used to Richie. Richie is Eleanor’s stepdad. Her mom is found that have bruises on her arm. It was not fully disclosed on how she got them, but I believe it was Richie. Eleanor is the new kid on the block. She was ostracized. Nobody wanted anything to do with her. They judged her by her weight and funny colored hair. Park was nice enough to have Eleanor sit next to him. Further on Park begins to be impressed by Eleanor. He is amazed on how Eleanor could recite her poem. He then gave her a comic to read and Eleanor appreciated it. Park is not like the other kids. He truly is understanding of Eleanor.
