I Want to Make an Impact on the World

The one thing I feel a college application would be incomplete without knowing about me is my driven desire and passion to make a difference. Out of all of the goals I have in life, helping people has to be the biggest target of mine. I want to make an impact on the world, no matter how small. Whether it’s helping someone ace a math test, or donating old clothes to charity, anything I do for others that’s appreciated I consider an accomplishment.

I’m very fortunate to be able to live my life comfortably as well as help better other peoples’ lives. For most people, Christmas is a time to spend with loved ones eating delicious meals, and exchanging gifts while embracing each other’s presence. However, some people have to spend the holidays without the people they love, without gifts, without food, and sometimes even without a place to sleep to comfort them throughout the festivities. I spend time with my family on a regular basis, so instead of taking advantage of that opportunity on Christmas as well, I volunteer with a small group of people to replenish some holiday spirit in those who aren’t as well off as we are. We go to a church in Oak Cliff and bring in clothes, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, tissues, deodorant, blankets, and other necessities for everyday life. We put one of each item in a bag to give to each visitor we have that day. While some people package bags, others are in the kitchen preparing a full meal for everyone who desires to receive one. It brings you a kind of happiness you can’t find any other way, knowing you helped someone make it one more day, knowing you’re the reason they’ll be safe that night, and knowing you made a difference in their life.

I have a sweet spot for animals. I’m the quickest person to take in any stray domestic animal, no matter the burden it places on me. All of the pets I have at the moment were once strays that my family rescued from various situations. We take them in, get them medical treatment, and try to find good permanent environments for them.
