The FFA mission states: “FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of others by preparing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.” This statement was plastered on a poster, and my eyes were drawn to it when I walked into my first day of agriculture class. When I was in elementary school, I was the secluded kid away from everyone else; therefore, I needed a remedy to break me out of my comfort zone. This mission statement poster was all I needed because it would challenge me to step outside my comfort zone. I needed something that would prepare me for a career and enhance my leadership capabilities.

To begin, personal growth was the objective of the freshman year agriculture class. On the first day of class, our teacher made us get in front of the whole class and give a little introductory speech about ourselves as an icebreaker activity. I could not imagine getting in front of our class to give a speech to unknown strangers. When I stepped in front of the class my heart started pounding furiously and I could feel my face turning its trademark blood red color. All that I could think about was hurrying up and getting it over with. After doing so, I realized that speaking in front of people I didn’t know was not so bad. Over the span of a few months, I made some great friends, and that agriculture course became my favorite elective. After Christmas break, my teacher introduced me to Junior Parliamentary Procedure where freshmen learn the basics of carrying out items of business. I was slated as the Vice President of the team. This was a great experience because it enhanced my knowledge of effectively running a business meeting and being able to carry out different parliamentary procedure abilities.

Secondly, your sophomore and junior years are strictly about becoming a prime leader. I was immersed into having to chair the newly formed Safety Committee. The Safety committee isn't recognized by the National FFA Association; therefore, I was given a hard task of trying to figure out to run a committee that our FFA Chapter has never had.
