When the Inspector started his questioning, Gerald pretended he didn’t know Daisy. He did not want to become implicated in anything that would make him look bad. Gerald then realised there was no way to hide the facts and tells how he met her in the Palace Music Hall which was a “favourite haunt of women of the town”. He describes how she stood out from the “dough faced” women as she was pretty with big, dark eyes but that he only knew her as Daisy Renton not Eva Smith. Here, Gerald becomes distressed as he realises the girl he once knew is dead.

Gerald described the night he met Daisy and the way he “saved” her from the womaniser Joe Meggarty making out he was way better than him. He said she agreed to leave with him immediately, making him look heroic and caring. The hypocrisy was that he went to the Palace Music Hall knowing there was a certain type of women who went there so really, he was just as bad as Joe Meggarty. He said he was happy just to let her talk; that she had been upset by the other mans advances. He kindly bought her food and gave her money and two nights later, Gerald arranged for her to stay in a friends rooms saving her from being homeless. He stressed he did this expecting nothing in return and that it was only because she was so “grateful “ to him that they started a relationship! This shows him again as being conceited and sure of his own worth. The hypocrisy is clear when he states that Daisy felt much more for him and that he was quite happy with the attention he got; he stayed with her knowing it would not be a lasting relationship.

He tells the Inspector that by early September, he had broken off their relationship and that she had been very “gallant” as he had made her the happiest she had ever been. He seemed to ease his conscience by giving her money as she had to move out of the rooms had had provided.
