Examination is a word that many students dread to hear, a word that many students fear of, a word that seems to have the magical power to transform a happy and cheerful person into a frustrated and nervous wreck. However, it is considered the key value to assess students’ knowledge. The argument that university exams should be abolished is both supported and refuted by many. In my opinion, the government should eradicate this type of assessment for a number of reasons.

First, from the perspective of learners, traditional examination is time-consuming and inefficient, which wrongly reflect students’ ability . Almost all students have to sit down in a room for two or three hours answer questions from memory. There are examinees who study excellently but may still fail this exam. Candidates have to suffer from the anxiety about their exams from the day they start revising for the tests to the day they receive the results. Their parents’ high expectations can also put them under pressure, and all these factors make students endure bouts of nervousness, which undoubtedly have negative effect on their exam. Cheating still happens in this exam, and a large number of students who only have average learning capacity can pass it easily by cheating. It is apparent that both bad and good under-graduates are wrongly evaluated in this way.

Second, from employers’ point of view, university exams are a poor method of assessment as they do not reflect the use of knowledge in a practical environment. They don't reflect how well you'll be able to use your knowledge in real world occupations. Research show that 75% of graduates lack essential working skills, which are not tested in university. What interviewers want from an ideal applicant is his practical skills such as verbal communication, teamwork and creativity, etc. Sometimes an average candidate can be hired thanks to his brilliant performance, not his marks at university.
