Executive Summary

At the end of last century, Microsoft is actual the software giant in the IT industry. However, as the failures to catch the shift to mobile devices, Microsoft is in danger of being marginalized in the IT industry in recent years.

Microsoft’s main problem was the decline in personal computer sales, on which its flagship Windows and Office products depended, moreover, it showed repeated instances of missing the technology shift and failure to lead innovation in Microsoft. On the other hand, Microsoft trailed far behind its competitors Apple, Google, Amazon in the marketplace of mobile devices, such as Tablets, Mobile Operating Systems and Devices, and Search and Online Advertising. The following essay would analyze the Microsoft’s issues and give recommendations to solve the problem and for the future development.

• Issue 1: the effective management with the organization transformation

• Issue 2: culture change and emergency to establish a collaborative culture

• Issue 3: key factors to the integration with Nokia

• Recommendation 1: Work out specific strategy of devices and services development planning with new organization. Microsoft devices should still focus on running the Windows family of operating system. Furthermore, Microsoft should change from closed innovation to open innovation.

• Recommendation 2: The new performance appraisal approach that emphasized teamwork and collaboration should be introduced soon to establish a collaborative culture. For the integration with Nokia, Microsoft could try to integrate the resources between each other and form the Microsoft-Nokia working teams to quickly embed each other’s culture.

• Recommendation 3: the implementation of effective management is emergent Nokia and Microsoft. How to preserve the talent in Nokia to achieve high reward should be put on the schedule.
