“How in the heck do you build an organization that is capable of reinventing not just one industry, but five or six--including computing, music, retailing, mobile phones, software, and maybe media and publishing as well? How in the world could one company accomplish this?”(). Leaders such as Steve Jobs of Apple Inc., and Bill Gates of Microsoft Corp. were able to do so through success, innovation, great passion, and power. Both leaders were able to gain different variations of power, such as positional, legitimate, and informational, through their abilities to surprise people with new ideas and products. “They were committed to exceeding expectations--to wringing little gasps of delight from even its most jaded customers”.() In addition, both leaders earned their power by climbing their way to the very top and by managing to keep up with the changing times. “In some ways, they were viewed as being indispensable”.() “Today’s fiercely competitive marketplace requires staunch devotion to excellence and the ability to see the big picture that affects the changing face of leadership”().

At Apple Inc., Steve Jobs had Legitimate Power. “Legitimate power is a person’s ability to influence others’ behavior because of the position that person holds within the organization. Legitimate or position power, as it is sometimes called, is derived from a position of authority inside the organization, often referred to as formal authority” (Lundenberg,2012). As a Chief Executive Officer of his company, he’s the one that made all the important decisions for the Organization. Jobs as a CEO was striking, he was an incredible leader, people worshiped him as an excellent innovator but he was disrespectful, rude, impatient, and completely brutal at times to his employees. He had an unconventional Management approach. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, “He was a "high-maintenance co-worker" who demanded excellence from his staff and was known for his blunt delivery of criticism”. “Steve Jobs has enjoyed legitimate power as the CEO of Apple. He could set deadlines and employees comply even if they think the deadlines were overly ambitious” (Flat world of Knowledge).
