Personal Responsibility

While blaming or burdening others for our shortcomings and failures is easy to do, it is crucial for individuals to take responsibility for our actions. Taking responsibility for our actions helps us do what is right when faced with dilemmas and conflicts. Taking responsible for our actions also helps us become more capable of overcoming challenges. Lastly, taking responsibility for our actions helps us become more organized, focused, and efficient.

Assuming personal responsibility means being responsible for your actions, accepting the consequences that come with those actions, and understanding that what an individual does, or fails to do, has an impact on the people around them. In Discipline without Stress, Punishments, or Rewards, a consequence only works when a person finds value in the relationship or when the person sees value in what he or she is being asked to do (Marshall, 2007). This responsibility can also be viewed as a set of life rules that individuals choose to live by, or choose not live by. This relates to doing what is right, being just and being socially correct when faced with any dilemmas and conflicts.

Possessing honesty and integrity is very important to personal responsibility when it pertains to the greater good. Frequently, this comes into play when no one is watching or monitoring us “Doing the right thing whether or not it is witnessed by others is a key part of taking personal responsibility for your actions” (Personal Responsibility, 2011). This is very critical when attempting to get along with others while supporting a community, group, or team.

To have success in college, a student must take on personal responsibility in many ways, including attending class, completing assignments, and studying for tests.
