Leading in Black and White

Although we have come a long way in terms of race in many ways there still exist a racial divide that provides a very unpleasant workplace environment for some people. It is a possibility to also experience other types of divisions in the workplace not just racial. Regardless, there should be no division at all in any workplace and this chapter helps make that tangible. As a manger it is important to keep certain things in mind when dealing with your employees. Because I have always been a proponent of equality one of the things I would do as a manager is demand and enforce equitable treatment. For me it would begin at the hiring process. I would need to assure the candidate being hired is a team player and is able to be on board with the policies I would put in place to assure that equitable corporate practices are being exercised. Through different job tasks and assignments I will encourage this behavior.

In order for you to demand anything from your staff one must lead by example. As a manger It would be very important for me and for the success of my staff to allow for differences in the workplace. There might be some employees who are effective at a task and others that might be efficient. Some might be average workers and others might be overachievers. Regardless of the type of employee it is important to provide the same opportunities to all the average members of your staff. Supporting efforts being made by the employees regardless of the differences is important because you are maximizing the use of the company’s most important resources, its employees.
