Leadership and Management

The text states that the true definition of leadership is that leadership is a phenomenon that is complex that involves the leader, those that follow and the situation they are in (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphey, 2009). Leadership can also be defined as the process where one person can get the support and aid of others in order to accomplish their task through social influence (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphey, 2009). Leadership also has the large task of coordinating and directing group members’ work. While also entailing the account of getting results from others, and the means of ability to build teams that are cohesive and goal-orientated, as well as being effective at different levels (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphey, 2009). These definitions show portions of what leadership is on different levels as well as during different tasks. In order for leadership to work a leader needs to balance each of the characteristics listed. Oprah Winfrey is a person who possesses these characteristics and they have made her successful.

Leader or Manager?

In many ways Oprah Winfrey has become a successful business woman. Without the great skills of a leader her success could not have been achieved. Oprah’s number of followers from many different cultures, backgrounds, level of finance, and from all over the world that look to her for her thoughts and opinions show why she is ideal to represent a leader. Her leadership role is not only emotional but also rational. This shows not only when she speaks on her show to guests and audiences, but also when she is talking to someone in person. She uses reason and logic to influence her actions, as well as things that she is inspired from or has a passion for to speak about.

Leadership Roles and Functions

Oprah’s achievements as an effective manager can be seen through her success as a television host, actress, entrepreneur, acceptance from so many fans worldwide and employees. Harpo productions appears to function without any hiccups. Due in part to those who do the work behind the scenes Oprah’s television shows, movies, magazines, and other Medias have shown great ratings.
