Describe the beginning of Joie de Vivre Hospitality.

Chip Conley founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality in 1987 when he was a 26-year-old Stanford Business School grad, disappointed with the corporate real estate market. His first venture into hotel ownership could have been a big flop; he raised $1 million to buy the rundown Phoenix Hotel in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. The first investors were made up of friends and family members in the forms of a loan and equity.

What traits make Chip Conley a good entrepreneur?

Conley’s business sense, combined with his creative flair, turned his first hotel into a hotspot for entertainers. His innovation is what leads to Joie de Vivre hotels each having a unique look and feel all of there own. By building the hotel from the ground up himself he also shows the trait of being a self-directed person. He also has a cunning ability to be a know leader who cares for his customers.

Consider the hotel business in terms of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Why did chain hotels become popular? Under what circumstances would someone choose a boutique hotel instead?

Based on the Maslow Hierarchy of needs chain hotels became popular because they fulfilled the need to feel safe, consistency and reliability. I give an example of Holiday Inn, this hotel is a place that is an affordable place to stay at the gives its customers a place to safely stay while away from home. While this appeals to our need to feel safe, we now have the need to feel more. We now want to feel that we are being treated special or belong, we look for a place that is unique and helps build our esteem, and finally we look for spontaneity, and creativity. Joie de Vivre hotels achieve this by having a different design for each hotel. The uniqueness of each provides the creativity and spontaneous desires we now look for while still providing the safeness that we desire
