Questions for Discussion

  1. What went wrong for Alejandro? What mistakes did he make?
  • Dan, the authority figure, left the meeting, leaving Alejandro with no management support.
  • Alejandro did not establish authority from the beginning, causing him to lose the crowd focus.
  • Alejandro should have anticipated the “old hands” would start objecting to his ideas and should have been prepared to keep them focused on the plan objectives.
  • He could have taken more of a leadership role, instead of showing any sort of intimidation to the crowd.

  1. Did Dan make a mistake in putting Alejandro in charge?

No. Dan could have left the meeting to test Alejandro’s leadership skills. If this was the case, Alejandro failed to show any sort of authority over the crowd. If this was not the case, Dan should have stayed to show Alejandro more support as management and encourage him and the crowd that Alejandro’s ideas were great and will be enforced. Either way, as management, I feel Dan leaving to play tennis was unprofessional and a negative view to the team overall.

  1. What should have been done to make the plan work? What should Alejandro have done differently? What should Dan have done differently?

Alejandro should have prepared more for the objections; he knew that there were “old-hands” so he needed to understand how they worked. He should have asked Dan for advice on how he dealt with the “old hands” in previous meetings. I think Dan should have stayed instead of walking out, although Alejandro was in charge the crowd fully didn’t accept them as the leader role yet.

  1. What does an “authentic leader” do?

An authentic leader speaks the truth and automatically from the start, grabs attention of the crowd. An authentic leader is one that will engage the crowd but in a way to move them towards the idea that he or she has presented. They will encourage and motivate team members in positive ways to continue to strive in the right path towards the overall goal.
