Business Alignment

[pic 1]

The business goals along with a business metrics is defined by the top management to measure the status of growth of the organization and helps in gap analysis. A business strategy is formed in line of the established goals and objectives . This strategy is then broken into functional strategy which deals with different functional departments of the organization viz. Finance, marketing, HR, manufacturing etc. These departments will have to frame short term strategies which are operational strategies. These can  also be day to day activities.

The flow among the different blocks depicts the flow of information, strategy, policies, information, feedback etc.

Information- We use data to find a pattern to get information.

Information can be put into two metrics. [Metrics tells us how to measure data]

Primary Metrics

Secondary Metrics(in the form of num/den)

Mass, length, time, effort schedule, resources, size (these give numbers)

  • Productivity
  • Defect density(e.g. number of defects per lines of code)
  • Schedule variation(comparison with the actual value or comparision of actual value with standard value)
  • Effort variation
  • Project overrun

  • Don’t take decisions based on data. We take decisions based on the secondary matrix. But for that we need benchmark and knowledge
  • Knowledge=information(internal)+benchmark

[pic 2]Vision, mission and goals are framed first by the top management of the organization e.g. to increase market shares. This gives us  business metrics which are quantifiable measures  which can track and assess specific business processes e.g. It would be the reported sales figure of the firm and the entire industry in this case. It leads to a business strategy which can be further broken down to functional and operational strategy. The functional strategy is for different departments like marketing, manufacturing, human resources etc. This is taken care by the managers or the head of the departments The operational strategy deals with the activities which are to be done on daily basis. These are mostly carved out by executives.[pic 3][pic 4][pic 5][pic 6][pic 7][pic 8][pic 9][pic 10][pic 11][pic 12][pic 13][pic 14]
