Part 1: Executive Summary

The City of Denver has decided to build a new airport at a cost of approximately $5 billion. This project represents more jobs and the expansion of the region’s economy. The current airport has limited operational capacity and obsolete technology. This expansion will include funds from the Federal Government through grants and revenue bonds. The City has made the decision to build an advanced baggage handling system; therefore the original plans have been modified.

The airport’s baggage handling system is an important component in the plan. By building a highly advanced automated baggage handling system the turnaround time will be reduced by approximately 30 minutes.

Unfortunately, due to the complexity of the project massive problems came up and the City has missed several times the opening dates. The delays have cost to the City and the main carriers millions of dollars and maintenance costs have been increased as a result of the situation.

Having said that, my decision is to modify the project and negotiate with the City in order to finalize the project. I do believe that our company has had flaws in the construction of the system but unexpected changes have made more difficult its implementation.

My proposal is to install an automated system moderate advanced but that can fulfills the ultimate goal which is to reduce the turnaround time and a satisfactory backup in one complete system.

This report will be used to discuss the current and propose challenges involve in the baggage-handling system at the DIA in the next coming management team meeting to be held on Friday, April 13, 2012.
