INTRODUCTION

This report titled “An Analytical Report on Leaders’ perception towards Mobile Technology in the workplace” addresses the research problem by qualitatively and quantitatively studying managers’ perceptions of mobile technology in the workplace. This report is submitted following the research proposal submitted on 25th November 2014.

Mobile technology has altered the way organizations conduct business inside and outside of the workplace. In 1999, as the mobile Internet first became available, users attained the ability to access technology for business purposes remotely (Meeker et al., 2010). Prior to mobile technology invention, employees had limited remote technology options available. However by 2010, more than one billion mobile technology users access wireless mobile technology devices, many using the technology for business purposes (Lin & Brown, 2007). Mobile technology devices accessed for work purposes primarily include: laptop computers, smartphones, and personal digital assistants, or PDAs (Meeker et al., 2010). The adoption of these devices has changed organizations because work is performed differently than it was in the 20th century. Mobile technology devices impact performance, culture, efficiencies, and t the structure of organizations (Lin & Brown, 2007).

Millions of employees access mobile technology for business purposes (Meeker et al., 2010), but what are managers’ perceptions of rapidly evolving technology and the impact it has on the workplace? Managers have the responsibility to make decisions about how mobile technology should be managed within an organization, which includes adoption and use. These leaders are asked to make decisions regarding mobile technology for varying position levels, including their own, but there is limited information regarding how their perceptions may influence mobile technology management. If managers were tooled with a greater understanding of their own perceptions regarding technology, they may be able to make more informed business decisions. he structure of organizations (Lin & Brown, 2007).

Research has been gathered through qualitative interviews with managers who work in varying leadership positions in organizations, and who have been a part of decisions made on mobile technology adoption. Also, a brief questionnaire was given to the managers to understand the perceptions of managers regarding mobile technology’s impact in the workplace. The practical significance is that while managers may have been tasked with leading mobile technology business initiatives, to date researchers have not studied what managers’ perceptions are regarding adopting this technology.

The finding of the study suggests that participants believe mobile technology has created an evolution in the workplace. Participants believe that if leaders understand their own mobile technology perceptions and review the perceptions of others, they could likely make more informed leadership decisions regarding business use of mobile technology for their managers and employees.
