It iis the story of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a perfume apprentice in France who begins to stalk and murder virgins, searching the perfect scent.

Grenouille was born in Paris, in 1738. His mother gives birth to him while working at a fish stall. Grenouille has an extraordinary power to discern odours. He passes the orphanage using mostly his nose, and barely his sight. Grenouille explores the city during his free time, and memorizes all the smells of Paris. He has no preferences and seeks out every smell and every variation of smell that he can find. When he's older and has to work in the city he smells the scent of young woman who is selling plums. He follows her, but when she turns and is scared, he clamps his hand over her mouth and she dies. Amazed of how good she smelles he decides to find a way to capture such scents. After that he soon becomes the apprentice of the perfumer Baldini and creates a lot of well selling perfumes for him. But when he tries to make perfum out of glass, iron and even baldinis cat he is completely dissapointed that he can't isolate the scent off everything. After that he falls ill, giving up on life because his dreams can never become true. He recovers immediately, when Baldini tells him that there are ways to isolate these scents and that he should go to Grasse, a village known for their great perfumers. During his travel he get further and further away from civilization to have to rest from all these odors that occupied his brain. He reaches the massive central and in this mountains he finds after while that he hasn't a personal odor. That encouraged him to continue his journey. He trevels through Montpelliers, where he tries to make a perfum with a human-like scent. He also finds out that he can manipulate people with the various scents.
