Stephen King "why We Crave Horror Movies"

We all crave horror movies, they give us this rush of adrenaline, and instil a desired fear corresponding with the movie’s plot. We also go to “feed” and let our dark side have some playtime.

Adrenaline, it’s why our hearts race, how our blood pressure rises, and what keeps our blood pumping. When watching a horror movie we experience all of that, and then some. Many people go for that specific feeling. While others go on that adrenaline rollercoaster just simply “to have fun (Para. 3)” states Stephen King. In “Why We Crave Horror Movies” King says that “our emotions and fears form their own body, and we recognize that it demands its own exercise to maintain proper muscle tone (Para. 5)” which brings me to the conclusion that the reason why adrenaline works that way is our dark side and ourselves our becoming one in that moment. Adding to why we crave horror movies is that we are able to see such atrocious acts being displayed to us but instead of being in danger and panicking, we are safe in a movie theater. We are able to live through something like that but I don’t think we all come out sane. Also in that dark theater where all you can hear is gasping and maybe even the strong pounding of some poor fool’s heart is where you’ll see everyone’s little demons come out to play.

Ever since the beginning of time, humans has been crucial to history, but as time progressed our entire existence has been tainted with desire. The things that were shunned many years ago are now publicized and on the big screen, King states “anticivilization emotions don’t go away, and they demand periodic exercise. (Para. 5)” in the beginning with the cavemen, they did not feel remorse for killing a human, because they took what they needed from the people that had it (survival of the fittest).
