Primitive communism refers to small tribes that were communist in nature, best described as egalitarian in nature. These tribes were nomadic hunters and gatherers. No person could own their own land, all worked everyday, and contributed to the existence of the group. The authority figures were chiefs, medicine men, wise women, and healers.

Monarchy: The Rise of the State

Monarchies are best described as a form of rule by a hereditary head of state and based on birthrights and royalty.

Democracy: Citizenship as a Radical Idea

Democracies are best described as political systems where people within a given state can vote to choose their leaders and in some cases might be able to vote on legislation.

Representative democracies refers to political systems where power is bestowed on those elected to rule. Here consent to rule is provided by the people. Direct democracies refers to a system where people have a say in decisions that directly affect them.

Citizenship means that the people of a given state can vote for their representatives and that they have rights and responsibilities as citizens

Dictatorship: The Seizure of Power

Dictatorships are characterized by totalitarian rule by either a single individual or a small group. These are best described as governments without the consent of the people being governed. Corporatism refers to a state regulated economy.

Cult of masculinity refers to dictatorships that organize political and public life around men and punished anti-masculine ideologies like homosexuality.

• The United States Political System

• The US is a two-party system, where members of two parties hold positions of political power. A multi-party system is one where more than two parties hold political office. A single-party system is one where a single ruling party holds political office.
