Who am I? What I'm I Doing in College!

My name is Alex Moreno I am twenty years young, I have been attending Reedley College for three semesters now. I was born and raised and Dinuba, CA. I come from a middle class and Middle Eastern family; I am child four out of five siblings, which of all graduated college so, therefore, it expected of me to graduate college and I’m working hard to achieve that goal. Starting out my college career, I started at Sacramento State University. I went there for only one semester, though, because it was too expensive, and I was going down a path of a lot of student loans, so I skipped out of the college party life and decided to come back home, and attend Reedley College. I am proud to say it was the best decision I have ever done. The reason why I attend college is because I really want to become a family nurse practitioner, but I have to become a Registered nurse before I get my Masters of Science in nursing. Many people ask why I want to a nurse practitioner instead of a doctor, and I explain to them I actually want to have personal life and practice medicine without sacrificing twelve to fifteen years of my life.

I consider myself a fairly good students overall, but I know that I am a weak writer. I have never been properly taught how to write academically because I have been taught by teachers that there are many different theories about what academic writing. For example, in high school, most of my English teachers told me I am an excellent writer while others said that I should seek tutoring so I can improve my writing skills. I did not know if I was a good writer or not, though, so I hated English classes. Starting off college, I was placed in English 5 at California State University of Sacramento, and I did really well in that course;  my professor there really fancied my writing, and always had more good comments and feedback than bad ones. Coming back to Reedley College I scored into English 1A according  to the placement, but my counselor highly recommended that I take English 125. I had a hard time in English 125 class; my professor, Lisa McHarry, extensively criticized  my writing and never liked anything I did, which was actually great because her comments really drove me to work harder in her class and, luckily, I managed to pull off an A in that class.

My weakness in writing overlaps my strengths in academic writing. One of my major weakness is that I am terrible at grammar; I have achieved a lot in the past twenty years but have not gain much grammatical skills. A weakness that every college student has is referencing text in an essay without it be concerned plagiarism. I think I am pretty good at staying on topic when I am writing I do not really go off track like most weak writers. Writing a good thesis statement is another issue that I have till this day I have never written a thesis statement that was acceptable by a college professor. Overall writing is my weak subject and I'm will to work hard to improve my writing. My perception of writing as a whole didn’t really change when I started college because the course I was enrolled it in high school like English classes, however I do hope my perception of college writing does change in this semester after this course.
