It has been a great and challenging journey over the past nine weeks. Within the past three specifically I have challenged myself as a leader to new heights. I learned that I have had many good and bad experiences with lateral leadership opportunities and from that I have/will continue to work on the proper art of persuasion. Persuasion was/is one of the most impactful things I have incorporated into my professional life. When I need to gain buy-in from the determining committee I will utilize the necessary four steps of persuasion (wk 7, lecture I have also learned that in order to achieve the results I need and get the job done I #1 have to have a plan in place. Whether I am starting a new leadership position or growing in a current position I need to be mindful that I need a plan. When you are a new leader the first 90 days are the most important and critical for your success. “Leaders are brought in to improve performance by imparting new ideas, making tough decisions, and instilling a can-do-spirit of achievement” (Watkins, M 2003). The fist 3 months of a leadership position is critical for you’re the effectiveness and success of your career depending on the ty.pe of business situation would determine your approach (startup, TurnAround, Realignment, and sustaining – STARS) (wk 9, lecture 1).
