DBQ “Era of Good Feelings”

When James Monroe was elected in 1816, he was the first representative of the one-party system. His victory, along with the end of The War of 1812, created a spread of nationalism known as the “Era of Good Feelings.” The time period after The War of 1812 is inaccurately called the “Era of Good Feelings” because of the conflicting views on the economy, slavery, and political divisions.

When it came to the economy, the U.S was not in an “Era of Good Feelings.” The Tariff of 1816 taxed manufactured imports in order to support the mostly northern business of manufacturing.

The south was against the tariff, but since the north had more representation in congress, it passed. This left southerners like John Randolph feeling aggravated by the lack of congressional support towards the southern economy. (Doc A). Another example of economic separation was during the Panic of 1819. Banks foreclosed and westerners lost a lot of land and money. The north did not assist the westerners during this panic. On July 4th 1819, the North was partying and feeling good, while the westerners were struggling greatly.
