The Global Security Policy

In any business where utilizing Information Technology, it is important to have security policies in place to set the ground rules for the whole company. Procedures exist to protect the company from any legal action if there is misconduct performed on the network. It also protects the user if they are following the policies laid out for them. In a global environment, these systems can be completely different for many reasons. Cultural differences from one country to another can create confusion, disarray, frustration, and anger.

Security Risks in a World Wide Business

    Across the world, there are many different governments making laws and setting them in place to prevent hackers, spammers, and criminal from using the internet and networks to compromise systems. Each government has several different variations to the laws. Some changes are very similar but have a few minor details added or left out. Other variations are drastically different, making other country’s laws similar to nothing. In other words, maintaining security in a company with offices in other countries can pose some security threats as well.

Privacy

In every country, there are differences in rights to privacy. In the United States, citizens have a greater right to privacy as long as they are not involved or suspected of involvement in criminal acts. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is an example of the safeguards American’s have to the right to privacy. In other countries, much like Singapore does not have specific laws set to protect a citizen’s privacy. They leave it in the hands of the sector-specific laws (Whitman 2011 pg. 308).

Financial and Banking Services

    There are many differences in the financial sector; the United States seems to be the biggest as far as some banking services provided online. Having some of the strictest guidelines that any company may have to safeguard user’s information online. The laws lay out that the guarantees required must be administrative, technical and physical (Whitman 2011 pg. 309). Securing financial information is vital to make sure there isn’t any money or customer information stolen or lost. The economic loss then would fall responsible to the financial institution.

Intellectual Property

    In the United States, the government with the FBI have been fighting to keep intellectual Property safe. Making sure that pirating Movies, Video Games, Music, Software, and Books, is illegal and carries a harsh punishment. Pirating can get you up to a $500,000 fine and or 5 years in prison. Piracy is not taken lightly and if a user is pirating the Internet Service Provider (ISP) is notified and told to warn the user. Then the FBI will monitor the ISP and the user to make sure the piracy does not persist. Living in the country of Croatia for four years, I know that they do not enforce or have any regulations against Piracy. There is no punishment for it, nor do they monitor piracy sold even in a physical form. There are open air markets where selling, movies, games, and music for personal gain.
