Should We Have Gone to War With Iraq?

There are many views with many perspectives on whether or not America should have invaded

Iraq. Do the benefits outweigh the risk? Are there more pro’s than con’s? Well, in my opinion, yes. The

war was necessary, and we absolutely should have gone to war with Iraq.

The tragedies that happened on September 11, 2001 proved America to be vulnerable, and sent

the message that large scale attacks on the United States was possible. According to Richard Perle,

chairman of defense there was a strong argument for looking at Iraq, because of the threats from

Saddam Hussein and the Weapons of Mass Destruction. These included chemical, and biological

weapons, and a nuclear program which was discovered after the gulf war. With the United States being

at risk and vulnerable, these threats could not be ignored.

Good things happened for Iraq because of America’s invasion. Saddam Hussein was an evil man,

and was internationally famous for his brutality as a dictator. He held torture chambers and prisons for

children aged four to twelve. He punished parents who displeased him by locking up their children.

Things like this were shut down when America invaded Iraq. There was even an attempt to put

democracy in Iraq, and Iyad Allawi, an Iraqi, wrote an article thanking America for this attempt, because

Iraqi’s wanted liberation. Spreading democracy in Iraq, though was more of a side bar initiative and

certainly not a main line of reason for invading Iraq.

While Saddam Hussein did not directly associate with Al Queda that does not mean there was no

imminent threat from Saddam. Saddam had training camps, and support for terrorist groups. “Baghdad

actively sponsored terrorist groups, providing safe haven, training, arms, and logistical support,

requiring in exchange that the groups carry out operations ordered by Baghdad for Saddam’s

objectives”. Saddam was intent on the development of more weapons of mass destruction, and there

was fear he would distribute these to other terrorist groups to be used by those plotting against the
