Abstract

In this investigation, measurements of a lab countertop were extracted to find the surface area of the countertop. I hypothesize that the measurements of the table will remain constant in a constant linear relationship. Different measuring tools are used to compare raw data and in creating a more accurate conclusion based on accurate data. The table was then measured using 3 different tools, the tape measure, half meter stick and full meter stick. The raw data supports the constant linear relationship to the nearest tenth of a meter for length and fully supports for the width of the table. This conclusion is important because it determines which measuring tools are more accurate and supports that the table is constant and does not change its measurements.

Apparatus and Procedure

Apparatus:

• Half-length meter stick

• Full-length meter stick

• Tape measure

• Marker

Procedure:

1. Gather necessary materials.

2. Start with a tape measure and measure the length of the countertop by unwinding the tape until the measurement is located.

3. Record data.

4. Repeat steps 2-3 to get the data for the width of the countertop.

5. Put away tape measure and take out a full-length meter stick.

6. Use meter stick in use as a measurement by placing it on the corner edge of the table; measure the length and temporarily place a marker to set a location before relocating the stick.

7. Relocate stick after placing a marker until measurement of counter side is reached.

8. Record data.

9. Put away full-length meter stick and take out a half-length meter stick.

10. Repeat steps 6-8 with half-length
