• Cemex, a building materials company has employed an internal collaboration platform called ‘Shift’ which combines modules similar to that of social media applications to enable its employees to coordinate with others having similar objectives and leverage skills and expertise among one another across functions and geographies.  It has changed the communication process in the company from top-down instructions to collaborative decision making and the organization structure from hierarchical to open culture.
• Shift has been used by several teams to address various concerns and achieve specific objectives through information sharing. Few of them are

• In the Commercial case, employees have shared value propositions across 20 countries through webcasts and blogs. Now a team in any country can browse through numerous ideas before selecting the best one for adoption.
• The Construction team has used Shift to address environmental concerns among clients and government regulations. The challenge is to devise region-specific sustainability solutions with cost-effectiveness. That’s where Shift comes in to bring experts from various areas to contribute ideas as well as evaluate other ideas through Cemex Jam, a voting exercise.
• The Clinker Factor Initiative aims at a shift from cementitious clinker to NCCM (non-cement clinker materials). Through Shift, global teams can now collaborate to explore and circumvent region specific availability of NCCM, sourcing and regulations.
• The Infrastructure Initiatives team has used Shift to pool in knowledge from domain experts across the organization to position Cemex as a trusted partner for government infrastructure projects
• The Cement Operations Security team is using Shift to share knowledge and ideas on ensuring workplace safety and security.

• Shift is a dynamic interface enabling continuous updation of data as well as an interface responsive to user needs. There are several functionalities like Tags, blogs, ideas bucket, internal and external links and practical guides which enable the user to navigate through the forum, find relevant information and contribute to that information pool.
