Introduction

Electromyography is a procedure or a test used to measure muscle response to a nerve’s stimulation of the muscle. The test is used to help detect neuromuscular abnormalities. During the procedure needles called electrodes are inserted through the skin into the muscle. One or more needles can be used. An electrical activity is then picked up by the electrodes and then shown on a monitor that displays electrical activity in the form of waves. The monitor is usually called oscilloscope. An audio-amplifier is used so the activity can be heard. Muscles do not produce electrical signals during rest. When a needle is inserted, the activity can be seen on the monitor (Oscilloscope). No signal should be presented after that. An electrode is inserted and the patient may be asked to contract the muscle. (Lifting or bending the leg).

The instruments needed

  1. Needles /also called Electrodes.
  2. A Monitor/Oscilloscope.
  3. An Audio Amplifier.

An Electromyography procedure

  • The patient asked to remove any clothing, jewelry, hairpins, eyeglasses, hearing aids, or other metal objects that may interfere with the procedure. The patient is given what to wear during the procedure.
  • The patient sits or lies down for the test.
  • A neurologist then locates the muscle to be studied and tested.
  • The skin of the patient is cleansed with an antiseptic solution and a sterile needle is inserted into the muscle. More needles may be necessary for the test. When the test is painful the patient should tell the Doctor because interfere with the results.
  • The patient should relax and then perform muscle contractions if asked the Examiner.
  • The electrical activity generated by working muscles is measured and displayed on the Monitor.
  • An audio amplifier is also used to evaluate sound of the electrical waves. A sound like hail on a tin roof is heard when the muscles are contracted.

Conclusion

After the procedure, paste used to attach the electrodes will be removed from your skin. The patient should return to his or her previous activities, unless your doctor advises differently.
