Yang Jianguo working as country manager for the China operations of Deronde International, a leading French perfume maker was promoted from country manager to senior vice president of global product development. Alain Deronde, CEO of Deronde International had chosen Jianguo over three others due to Jianguo’s intimate knowledge about Asian Market and his technical wizardry. The challenges faced by him included the decline in market share of Deronde and the loyal buyers of its signature brands were getting older.  

Yang Jianguo felt nationalistic pride in his promotion as senior vice president of global product development, as he was the first Chinese national chosen in the field of product development in international cosmetics industry. At the same time, he was critical about the CEO’s idea of cobranding with Parisian dermatologist. He was feeling suffocated in a different cultural environment outside his comfort zone. He conceived the idea of exploring Chinese market especially the youth and developing fragrance as per tastes of Chinese youth.

He also proposed that Deronde to acquire many small labs in Brazil and China for research and development. He believed that company should engage famous personalities like football players, cricket players and hockey players in each emerging markets. His proposals did not gain any positive response from CEO or his colleagues. Jianguo got frustrated and confused for not getting a positive response from the senior, management and his peers in the company. Jianguo has got lot of fresh ideas, but which seems to be not getting any attention from the top brass of the company. Jianguo’s perceived that he could replicate his success story in his new role as well and at the same time he is getting perplexed and frustrated about the response towards his ideas and proposals from his superior, subordinates and peers.

Alain Deronde, CEO of Deronde International, which was a family business with unmistakable pride in French identity and design. Alain identified and promoted Jianguo to tap the opportunities in the emerging markets especially the Asian market. He was planning to use the potentials of Jianguo to connect the east and west markets for his product line. He chose Jianguo over three other employees of his company, despite they were close to him and from the same region from where he come from, considering the technical brilliance and knowledge over the emerging market especially like China and other Asian counties.
