Title:

Implication of hand-arm vibration (HAV) from the perspective of gender and workload

  1. INTRODUCTION

Recent years, people are very closed to the machine as the machine’s revolution have been growth rapidly. Machine can be very useful for human being as it can increase the efficiency of human’s life. Many manufacturing industry have been used machine to increase their productivity without concerned about the risk that came from that machine to the human. Vibration is the one of the element that being produced by any machine which can give the long term of risk to the human health. Hence, it need to be measured to make sure that the vibration exposure to the human in control. Vibration exposure can be in hand-arm vibration (HAV) and whole-body vibration (WBV) however, this research is more cover on HAV.

  1. Background Of Problem

HAV is a vibration that transmitted from causing-vibration tool like driller and hammer into the operator’s hand and arm. Prolonged exposure to HAV will lead to the disorders in the vascular, sensorineural and musculoskeletal structures of human fingers-hand-arm system. This illness can be called hand-arm vibration syndrome. The use of vibrating tools and high forced and repetetive hand wrist movements are important risk factor for work-related carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), which cause pain, paresthesiae and numbness (Cannon et al, 1981). However, if it can be controlled early, this disorders can be avoided.

  1. Problem Statement

Previous research on vibration injuries has predominantly been done on men (Byland, 1998). There are indications however that vibration induced injuries could be more common in women (Dimberg and Oden, 1991). Women also seem to develope injuries after a shorter period of vibration exposure compared ith men (Dart, 1946; Urban and Lucas, 2000). Hence this research can be an alternative study on women.

  1. Research Objective

The main objective of this research is more on to study the amount of vibration exposure that will be transmitted on to female operator and provide the working schedule to reduce the vibration exposure. Briefly, the objective are:
