Personal Reflection

Throughout the course of this year my management experiences as a learner and a future teacher have changed dramatically. Before taking this class I thought that it would be very easy to manage a classroom, but I’ve come to realize that there are so many small details that you need to be prepared for in order to manage a successful classroom. Throughout my practicum hours I was able to observe four different teachers and this was very beneficial. I got to observe teachers that had good management skills and one teacher who had very bad management skills. The teachers that had good management skills showed throughout their classes. When students walked into their classes they walked in quietly and grabbed their text books right away. They logged onto their computers and knew exactly what they were supposed to do. The teacher that had bad management skills didn’t seem to have control over his class and they were always disrupting the class. The teacher had to raise his voice in order to get control of his students and I also even witnessed him whistle out loud at his class to get them to be quiet and get control. This teacher had many bad characteristics of managing his classroom. This course has taught me what it takes and how prepared you need to be in order to manage your future classroom effectively.

Beliefs about your students

Every student learns differently and it is the teacher’s job to ensure that the students are getting multiple instructional strategies. Everyone is different and everyone doesn’t learn the same way. Some students learn better with visual learning, critical thinking whereas other students might learn better by hands on work or auditory learning. There are three characteristics to be an effective teacher which are; positive expectations for student success, teacher knows how to design lessons for student mastery and the teacher is an exceptionally good classroom manager (Wong, 2009). Classroom management is the practice and procedures that teachers use to create and maintain an environment in which instruction and learning can occur (Wong, 2009). In order for student learning to occur the teacher must create a well ordered environment. The less time that teacher’s spend managing their classroom conflict and problems, the more time they can spend on instruction. The first few weeks of school are very crucial as a teacher because this is how they shape their classroom and get their classroom management to become a daily routine. I will fit this role by making sure that before the school year starts I am very prepared and organized. I will also make sure that I am doing the proper procedures that we talked about throughout the year that makes a teacher a good classroom manager.
