1. Vancity is a very successful organization as defined by a number of business criteria. Apply the principles stated in the section “Working Today” to describe why Vancity has achieved this distinction.

Vancity is a company which provides their employees with a flexible and stress free work environment. They understand that a successful organization would place emphasis on a healthy and balanced workplace.  By providing flexible work hours, it promotes a better work / life balance.  This in turn causes the employees to feel satisfied and valued which leads them to feel more motivated to work hard and effectively.

2. Describe how Vancity creates value for the customer using Figure 1.2. Follow one aspect of Vancity’s service to the customer through this model.

Vancity is a credit union company which provide loans to people who have difficulty obtaining one from a more traditional banking institution.  They take an individual approach to each potential customer and they are the “first in American credit union to revive an R1 rating from the Dominion Bond Rating Service, and the first financial institution to offer its own socially responsible mutual fund”.   

In addition, a portion of their profits are placed back into the community and environment in which they operate their business.Vancity also believes and supports gender equality as well as gay and lesbian rights.  

3. Figure 1.3 helps to determine a company’s productivity using the criteria of effectiveness and efficiency. Describe Vancity’s productivity using this model.

Vancity’s main problem was in the Human Resources (HR) department, as they did not reach their goal expectation.  The problem was discovered through cooperative surveys completed by employees.  This situation resulted in low success rate of the company and failing to reach the target.  Vancity found a better solution to solve this problem by improving the organization's Information Technology department and training the employees on  the improvements.

4. Use Figure 1.4 to describe the driving forces from the general environment that has an impact on Vancity. Describe the overall strength of the driving forces on a scale of 1 to 10

Technological environment (7) – Vancity discovered a way to improve  the Information Technology (IT) skills of the company by sending employees for training classes.

Natural Environment (10) – Vancity contributes a lot to the society.  They found out a new approach by Pigeon Park Savings (provide banking services to the poor).
