Contribution Towards The Hope of a Healthier Lifestyle in US

The topic revolving obesity, unhealthy food choices, and an unhealthy lifestyle in general is one that is most discussed in any setting today. Since many people have different viewpoints, it is also one of the most controversial. Different groups of people have different beliefs on who is to blame for the downward spiraling effect of the health of Americans. Different writers and public figures also have their own viewpoints and much to say on the topic but in the end, they all have the same gameplan on how this problem can be reversed. Although the western lifestyle is a fast paced one, it is up to us as individuals to make the most of the vast opportunities offered for a healthier future not only for us, but for all.

In the article “What You Eat is Your Business”, Radley Balko argues that government is fighting obesity the wrong way. According to Balko, rather than fostering a sense of personal responsibility in Americans in order for them to make better food choices, the government is making the well-being of citizens a matter of the public by making them pay for the bad food choices of other citizens. Hitting on the same topic, Michelle Obama’s Remarks to the NCAAP, discusses obesity, especially in children as well as it talks about government contribution that is leading many individuals down a unhealthy lifestyle. Her main point reflected that although it is up to the individuals to bring forth a change, it is a collaborative effort and also requires effort from the government and other officials. Her plea to the association basically was asking them for help to bring forth a change specifically in African American societies because as they know, together, many people can enforce and bring forth a positive change.
