The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

This story is about a girl named Dorothy who lives in Kansas with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em on their farm. She has a dog that she loves very much named Toto. There they have a crabby neighbor, Elvira Gulch, who is always causing problems for Dorothy and her family. One ordinary day there was a huge tornado and Dorothy didn’t make it to safety and was picked up by the tornado. After being picked up by the tornado she hits her head and has strange dream where she sees her neighbor as a witch flying on a broom.

When Dorothy wakes up she finds herself in the Land of Oz with her dog Toto. She looks around and finds herself in the midst of small people called the Munchkins who are excited over something when she finds them. They are excited because the house Dorothy arrived in had landed right on the Wicked Witch of the East, who had been tormenting the Munchkins for years. The Good Witch of the North appears and gives Dorothy some silver slippers. She then tells Dorothy to follow the yellow brick road that leads to the Emerald City, where the Wizard of Oz-who is very knowledgeable-lives. The Witch tells Dorothy that the wizard may know a way for her to get home.

As Dorothy travels down the yellow brick road, she encounters a scarecrow that wishes he had a brain. She then comes across a tin woodsman who wishes that he had a heart. Finally she meets a cowardly lion who wishes he had courage so that he could stand up and face his enemies. Since each had a problem, they all decide to travel to the Emerald City to see the wizard.

When they arrive at the Emerald City, they were asked by gate guardians to wear green glasses while they stayed in the city. When they meet the wizard he appears differently to each of them. Dorothy sees a big head, the
