Drew Annabel – Year 9

Hello my name is Drew Annabel and today I am here to talk to you about how the representation of love has changed over time. The texts I will be using to convey this will be Rosemary Clooney’s poem from 1954 “Goodnight Wherever You Are” and the song “Say You Won't Let Go” by James Arthur released in 2016.

In the 1954 poem “Goodnight Wherever You Are” I believe that love is represented through the way she shows that her love for her partner is ever present, although he is away at war and she may never see him again.

The composer conveys this perspective of love through the quote “Goodnight Wherever You Are”; by using these words she shows that however far away her partner is, she is thinking of him, and will always love him while believing he will one day come home to her.

The technique she used was repetition. This technique reinforces her feelings of love for her partner. I believe she needed to repeat what she was saying to emphasis her message and show the reader that they can still love someone on the other side of the world.

In the poem “Goodnight Wherever You Are” by Rosemary Clooney, love is represented as unconditional and although her partner may be far away, no matter what happens Rosemary will always love him. I believe that by saying Goodnight, she could continue to believe that, although he was at war, that he was still alive and safe. In this way, just as she would say Goodnight to him if he were home, the gesture helped her to cope with the anguish of her loved one being away at war.

In the 2016 song “Say You Won’t Let Go” by James Arthur, love is represented through the words that imply he can’t leave his loved one and that he would do anything for her. Throughout the song he sings about how he will love her forever and that he will be there for her. Through these lyrics James Arthur represents love in his song.
