EMPLOYEE BENEFITS AND SERVICES

AT

NORTHERN SAVINGS CREDIT UNION

Beside the direct pay of salary, indirect pay of employee benefits and services are one of the most important tools that help an individual when seeking and comparing a job (Schwind, Das, Wagar, Fassina, & Bulmash, 2013, p. 367). Employee benefits and services are also a tool used by businesses to attract potential applicants, improve employee satisfaction, reduce turnover and maintain competition. Because of that, Tien and Carolynn met with Santa Slubowski, Human Resources manager of Northern Savings Credit Union (NSCU) in Prince Rupert, and asked her several questions regarding the benefits and services that are being offer in NSCU. This paper will outline and described the benefits and services that NSCU offer to their employees.

BACKGROUND

With four branches, stretching from Terrace in the east to the Queen Charlotte Islands in the west, NSCU has evolved from several smaller and closed-bond financial co-operatives. NSCU is the result of mergers by numerous smaller credit unions. During 1940 three community credit unions formed on the Queen Charlotte Islands: New Masset Credit Union, in Masset, Q.C.I. Central Credit Union, in Port Clements, and Skidegate Inlet Credit Union, in Queen Charlotte City. During the same year the Prince Rupert Fishermen’s Credit Union, a close bond credit union for fishers, incorporated in Prince Rupert. In 1945, two other close bond credit unions formed in Prince Rupert: the Celco City Credit Union, a credit union for pulp mill employees, and the Royal Canadian

Legion Credit Union, for war vets. Another community organisation was also formed in 1945, Kaien Consumers’ Credit Union, incorporated to serve Prince Rupert citizens (British Columbia Institute for Co-operative Studies, 2002).

NSCU, a non-union, has developed itself into one of the largest credit unions in Northern BC with assets over $800 million. NSCU described itself as a community-based, member-owned, and democratically governed, with a vision of
