The name of this article was “Merkel, in Reversal, Urges Rescue of Euro”. This article was published on February 4, 2011, in the New York Times. The majority of this article was centered around Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel and how she has changed her stance on the Euro.

In the beginning of this article you see that Mrs. Merkel has been very consistent in her ways of stalling any type of rescue efforts to save the value of the Euro. In fact she was so stern in her ways of stalling that the public gave her the nickname of “Frau Nein”. Although suddenly we have seen a shift in her attitude towards the Euro, she is now saying yes to changing policies in order to save the value of the Euro.

Mrs. Merkel and French president, Nicolas Sarkozy will now lead the charge of saving the Euro by presenting new ideas on how to save their currency to twenty-seven government leaders. Some of the ideas these two are proposing would include coordinating retirement ages across countries, getting rid of any links between wages and inflation and also bringing corporate tax systems closer together. Mrs. Merkel is also making a push for more integration between the countries within the Euro zone, this would include regular meeting between the leaders of these countries.

Although these Euro zone nations do see the need to save the value of the Euro they did not completely agree with Merkel’s entire proposal. For example, Ireland, Estonia and Slovakia disagree with any part of the proposal that could possibly interfere with their right to set corporate taxes. Possibly the most disliked part of the entire proposal all the way across the board would be the rise in pension ages.

Despite the fact that Mrs. Merkel’s stance on the Euro was once compared to a small animal that was about to be devoured by a large snake, she has now made a huge leap to become one of leaders when it comes to saving the Euro’s value. Although some nations
