In order to adjust to the reform of Argentine's economy, Merck Sharp & Dohme Argentina (MSD), Inc., the regional subsidiary of the U.S.-based pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co., Inc, is undertaking some changes to modernize its business practices and corporate culture. To bring its subsidiary up to the same standards expected in other countries, Merck & Co., Inc. appointed Antonio Mosquera as the new Managing Director at MSD. Under Mosquera's management for one year, some organizational changes have taken place and a new corporate culture has emerged. However, the management team is now facing a dilemma deciding whether to hire an intern who did not make the shortlist but has a personal connection that would benefit MSD's sales. I believe that MSD should not hire the intern and this paper will demonstrate the rationale behind my recommendation.

When facing the dilemma of selecting the candidates for the internship program, Ring, the Manager of Training and Development, was not sure what decision she should make. She is afraid of missing a good opportunity to increase MSD's sales by not choosing a candidate that has very influential family background. However, hiring the intern will result in breaking the company's ethics value. I believe Ms. Ring should not to hire the intern for the following reasons. The new value system in MSD has just been recently established and therefore the enforcement of the standard should be seriously carried out. One exception may result in the collapse of the new organizational structure. In addition, the overall objective for the company at this stage is more about modernizing the new management style and corporate culture rather than increasing sales or taking up more market share. Finally, Ring herself has benefit from Mosquera's vision when she was promoted the manager level position, she had a deep understanding in how difficult to implement changes in the organization and
