Case Study: Managing change at Faslane

INTRODUCTION:

This report has been prepared as per the academic requirements for the Module: Leadership & Organizational Effectiveness (MGT506), which is taught by Dr Lawrence Arokiasamy. The report is divided in three section and each section focus on a different aspects. The first section is a detailed analysis of two different change styles which are used in the case study, John Howie and Craig Lockhart. The second section focuses on the levers of change, which are used in the whole case study and also discussed about the other changes which can be used. Whereas, the third section is a brief detail of effectiveness of the change programme.

In the year 2002, Ministry of Defense and the Royal Navy, who was directly controlling the HM Naval Base Clyde (Faslane) decided to join forces with Babcock International or in other words, we can say that, decided to be partnering with one of the private sector company called Babcock International. The main purpose behind the partnership of both the organization is to refine their administrations and cutting down their expenses. The main responsibility of Babcock Marine’s is to improve their operational effectiveness and also saving them costs. In order to smooth over the transition, it was essentially important for Babcock to utilize change management keeping in mind about the goal, which is to achieve a saving target of £76 million within a given period of time (5 years). The target was successfully achieved by Faslane and also was considered best which was achieved with a significant change. Both directors utilized diverse change styles and levers of progress in their patching up of the operations of Faslane, to awakening achievement.

Question 1:

Describe the change styles of John Howie and Craig Lockhart.

Answer:

From 2002 to 2006 the Babcock marine overseeing Director was John Howie and from 2006 the Managing Director was Craig Lockhart. From the period 2002 there has been a huge change process. The primary point of doling out the administration to Babcock was on the grounds that it was more aggressive, diverse targets, experienced administration abilities which are very surprising from that of administration segment.
