Executive Summary

This paper presents the Management Task Analysis for three types of car manufacturing organizations:

  • A team that designs and builds high-performance racing vehicles to be used in professional racing (e.g. Formula 1, Indy Cars, etc.). The team or organization chosen as the subject in this paper is the Formula 1 team – Infiniti Red Bull Racing.
  • A high-end luxury car (e.g. Bentley, Rolls-Royce, etc.) assembly plant. Rolls Royce is the chosen subject for this paper in this segment.  
  • A modern automobile assembly plant producing a mid-priced family car. Toyota’s manufacturing and processes have been looked at in this segment.

The paper discusses the key management tasks for the three organizations, the general characteristics of each production process and the product (taking into consideration various categories like planning and control, labor skill, and material and inventory requirements) and ends with a summary analysis of the competitive priorities for each of the three organizations

Course learning around tactical procedures of operations management have been applied in preparing this paper. Various technology and information sources related to operations management have also been used in the compilation.


Introduction

Here is s a brief overview of the three organizations that are subjects of this paper:

Infiniti Red Bull Racing: Referred to as Redbull racing or F1 in this document is a UK based, Austrian owned Formula 1 team that is powered by a Renault engine, they were formed in 2005 and have won 4 championships with their cars. The organizations employs 300+ people for developing/manufacturing the cars, the car comprises of 6500 unique parts, 100,000 components and is built out in UK based machine shop with a lot of manual actions.

Rolls Royce motors: Rolls Royce motors is the maker of high-end luxury cars formed in 1973 and is now a subsidiary of BMW motors, the manufacturing of the cars happens in UK and Germany. They handcraft lot of their interior parts before assembling it to the chassis with the high-powered Roll Royce engine. Roll Royce cars cost more that $200,000.

Toyota Motors is one of the largest automobile manufacturers producing more than 10 million vehicles per year. Toyota has long been recognized as an industry leader in manufacturing and production with their operational philosophy of lean manufacturing and just in time production. They have highly automated assembly lines for all product lines that drives their business with high volume, high quality production enabling the company to sell low-cost vehicles.
