Introduction of Business Sustainability

Sustainability becomes important to business plan and organization strategy. It is increasing public attention and debate in every where around the world. However, many business companies do not understanding very well about what sustainability means because of lack information about business sustainability. Moreover, Companies do not share a common definition or language for discussing sustainability and some define it very narrow. (Berns et al., 2009) Especially, leader of their organization never think to make sustainability is value goal of their businesses. In this time, businesses have to understand many sectors such as environment groups, public boycotts and government legislation because all of those sectors can impact to their businesses. Many companies try to understand how they can operate sustainably in order to make their businesses successfully. Companies have to develop new capabilities and characteristics, including the ability to operate on a system wide basis and collaborate across internal and external boundaries, and encourage long-term thinking capabilities in the areas of activity measurement, process redesign and innovative technology in order to improve their abilities in their businesses area. (Berns et al., 2009)

Business sustainability is narrowly concept that many people do not understand the meaning. This report tries to explain about business Sustainability by using the case study in three successfully companies in different kind of businesses such as CH2M HILL, Coca-cola, and Plastic Logic.

CH2M HILL

1.1 Company Overview

CH2M HILL is a consulting company in Denver, Colorado, USA. There are 23,000 employees around the world. ("2011 sustainability report ," 2011) CH2M Hill have many types of business such as full-service capabilities in multiple business units, Facilities and Infrastructure; Energy and Water; and Government, Environment, and Nuclear. Business groups served include: Water; Transportation; Operations and Maintenance; Government Facilities and Infrastructure; Nuclear; Environmental; Energy and Chemicals; Power; and Industrial and Advanced Technology. (CH2m.com, 2011) CH2M Hill helps clients to develop and maintain clients’ project by their method. H2M Hill associates in several large, complex projects around the world such as the new deep tunnel system in Singapore, gas-fired power plant in Australia. (Rowson, 2009)

1.2 Environmental impact

CH2MHILL emphasizes environment impacts of their own operations. CH2MHILL works toward continuous improvement in their materials and services, facilities management, carbon footprint, and water use.
