Internal Analysis of J&J Electrical Contractors, Inc.

Introduction

J&J Electrical Contractors is considered a “small fish in a big pond.” The purpose of this internal analysis is to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the company internally which can determine the firm’s future success. The firm’s strengths is what the company can rely on and the weaknesses are needs that need to be corrected or minimized as competitor factors. This analysis also includes looking at the firm’s competitive advantage which are factors that set a company apart from its competitors and gives it a unique position in the market. In addition to their competitive advantage, it is important to look at their core competency which is a unique set of lasting capabilities that a company relies on to achieve competitive advantage and add value. A look at J&J’s value chain and doing a financial analysis will help determine more strengths and weaknesses that the company possesses.

Competitive Advantage

J&J Electrical has unique factors that enable them to provide value for their customers. The reason that J&J has been able to stay afloat is due to their excellent experience in the field. J&J is known to be a company that knows what they are doing and are exceptional with their customer service. J&J has been in the industry long enough to know how contracts should be won and how they should not be won. For example, J&J is very smart in terms of how they handle change orders. Compared to amateurs, J&J wants to have legitimate change orders whereas their competitors will “push the envelope by starting out with a low bid and then try to recoup their costs by submitting change orders.” J&J knows better than to do this by doing everything right in the beginning so that these illegitimate change orders are not needed. This is an example of how J&J’s vast experience in the industry has become a competitive advantage for them compared to the other companies that are recouping for their low bidding by requesting change orders.
