Canada: An Outlook of Prosperity

Canada is a country, consisting of ten provinces and three territories, in the northern part of the continent of North America. It extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean, covering 9.98 million square kilometers in total, making it the world's second largest country by total area and the fourth-largest country by land area.

Canada is often characterized as being very progressive, diverse, and multicultural Canada's culture draws from its broad range of constituent nationalities, and policies that promote a just society are constitutionally protected.

Following are social indicators of Canada's political and cultural values.

  • Publicly Funded Health Care
  • Progressive Taxation
  • Outlawed Capital Punishment
  • Strong Efforts to Eliminate Poverty
  • Emphasis on Cultural Diversity
  • Strict Gun Control
  • Legalized Same-Sex Marriage

A multitude of languages are spoken in Canada. According to the 2006 census, English and French are the preferred language of 67.1% and 21.5% of the population, respectively. English and French are recognized by the Constitution of Canada as "official languages”.

According to the 2006 census, the country's largest self-reported ethnic origin is Canadian (accounting for 32% of the population), followed by English (21%), French (15.8%), Scottish (15.1%), Irish (13.9%), German (10.2%), Italian (4.6%), Chinese (4.3%), First Nations (4.0%), Ukrainian (3.9%), and Dutch (3.3%).

Canadian values include freedom, respect for cultural differences and a commitment to social justice.  Canada is a large country with a relatively small population. The democratic setup and the efficient implementation of human rights legislation makes sure every individual, irrespective of gender, race, caste, sex, religion and beliefs are treated equally and fairly.

Strict execution of laws, for example- rules related to minimum wage and employment of members of designated groups, helps in bringing about equality and saves the employees from undue hardships and exploitation

  • Equality- Canada respects everyone’s rights. Every person has a right to speak and express ideas that others might disagree with. Government treats everyone with equal dignity and respect.
  • Respect for Cultural Differences- Canada tries to understand and appreciate the cultures, customs and traditions of various groups of people that have made Canada as their second home.
  • Freedom- Canadians enjoy basic freedoms, such as freedom of thought, freedom of speech, Freedom of religion and freedom of peaceful assembly.
    Canadian society is a non-violent one and even plays international role in peacekeeping.
  • Law and Order- Canada follows democratic decision set up of governance. With the most important right with the people- Right to Vote. Canada promotes equality and strict adherence to laws. Canada ensures that elected governments remain accountable to Canadians.

According to Hofstede’s Cultural Values, Canada, as a nation, scored 80 on individualism and was characterized as an Individualist.

In Individualist societies, people are supposed to look after themselves and their direct family only. Studies have shown that when individual values align with organizational values, the results are very positive.
