Abstract

This research project is about the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen); a satellite-based system implemented in the United States and across the world. This project will show how a satellite-based system is a far better technology than the current radar ground-based technology. The objective of this group project is to prove that if NextGen technology is implemented, it can provide various benefits to the national airspace system and across the world. NextGen technology will allow aircraft to save tons of fuel every year by allowing pilot to take direct and shorter routes, it will have a greater impact on the environment by reducing carbon dioxide emission induced into the atmosphere; moreover, and it will also enable air traffic controller to have greater flexibility and traffic management with the help of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and other NextGen programs implemented in all facilities. This project will also define all problems and solution in implementing from the old system to the NextGen technology, and how they will be applied to all project outcomes of the ASCI 490 Capstone Project.

Exploring the Systems Comprising the Next Generation Air Transportation System and Their Benefits to the National Airspace System

Statement of the Project

The use of aviation in the transportation systems is an ever growing and expanding industry.  Aviation has been one of the fastest and safest ways to transport people, goods, and manufactured items.  This group project will focus on the systems comprising the Next Generations Air Transport System and the benefits to the national airspace.  The group will utilize critical thinking, information literacy and quantities reasoning skills to gather current information, properly analyze research, and portray a fluent connection of thoughts on the Next Generation technology related to aviation.  The group will analyze and highlight the multiple benefits gained from the changes in communication between pilots, controllers and UAS operators brought about by implementing NextGen technology. The research will include several different elements of scientific literacy, cultural literacy, lifelong personal growth, aeronautical science, aviation legislation and law, aviation safety, and aviation management and operations. Scientific literacy and cultural literacy will be used to understand the scientific evidence and historical events that have improved aviation and given it a new direction to become more efficient.  Lifelong personal growth will be used to understand the substantial quality of life improvement from newer technology.  Aeronautical science will be used to understand the concepts and ideals of Next Generation technology.  Aviation legislation and law will give a better understanding of the rules and regulations already established for newer technologies and their use in flight.  The group will fully analyze the aspects of aviation safety and the impact of Next Generation technologies on safety.  Aviation management and operations will provide the group with a better understanding of how the flight line works when the Next Generation equipment will be installed.  The research provided will show that the group has successfully obtained the concepts and skills that have been provided at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University whilst pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Aeronautics to fully cover several objectives for this project.
