Conflict refers to some form of disagreement, which arises between two groups or members when actions or beliefs of one member are not acceptable to the other. Conflict can lead to wars between members involved. In a case where the conflict involve ideas, there are high chances of propaganda.

Nature of conflict

It arises from varied perspectives, contradicting systems, and values, differing objectives and interests. To handle conflict efficiently, the mediator needs to manage the interests and values of the involved parties and meet them independently before bringing them together. It is difficult to arrive at a resolution if each partner’s interests and values are not heard. It is through conflict that we get an opportunity to define ourselves better. Conflict resolution gives us a chance to evolve again. It is not our wish to find ourselves conflict with those people we spend much time with but at some point, we just find ourselves in conflict with them. There is a sense of self-fulfillment in our lives whenever we resolve conflict with the people around us in an amicable way. It brings peace into our hearts and even strengthens our relationship with them. In addition, we get skills on how to avoid conflict in future while providing ways of solving them whenever they arise.

Components of conflict

There are four major types of conflict

Interpersonal conflict: this refers to conflict between two people. This arises due to differing opinions and values that lead to incompatibility. This type of conflict is most common both in our homes and in workplace. To handle it, we should come up with adjustments that allow us to accommodate each other. When interpersonal conflict gets too far, it calls for a mediator to help resolve it.

Intrapersonal conflict: this occurs within an individual. I call it silent conflict, as it may be difficult to notice unless the person share the experience. It is psychological and it involves an individual’s thoughts and feelings. It may come in varied ways, like one deciding whether to go for a party on a Friday evening or watch his favorite program on a local television. This has a major effect on crucial decision and it can be very difficult for people to handle on their own. It leads to depression. The best way to handle it is through sharing of information to reduce anxiety.
