One symptom that I noticed that could have underlying problems specifically with Bobby is anger. Some underlying problems that could arise from this symptom include issues with the team morale, player confidence, and even issues with public image, parents or other faculty. A problem with having to deal with an abrasive coach is the possible backlash that could happen from several sources including the media, administration, players, and parents. Not all athletes can respond in a positive manner to a negative coach. In order to have a successful season all athletes need to have both criticism and praise to improve. One without the other will only break down the athlete. One issue that has to be addressed with a softer coaching style is initiative. The coach is placing a lot of responsibility on the athletes in this situation to step up and lead each other through good and bad times on the court. If there is a clash of leadership on the team or a lack of it then there is the risk that the season will be an unsuccessful one.

The coaching approach of Bobby is not entirely negative. A major strength that the team can gain from this approach is the passion for the game that the coach has. Mr. Knight takes his passion to an extreme; however there is no doubt about his knowledge of the game and how strongly he feels about it. A major weakness with this kind of passion and anger, however is that not all athletes can do well under this kind of stress. Fearing a coach works for some, but for those that can’t handle this stress they may lose confidence in themselves and their abilities causing a decrease in performance. Another weakness from having a coach like this is that it can draw negative public attention that not only reflects on the coach, but will transfer to the team itself and the school. With this negative attention the administration may not work as well with student athletes causing negative relationships to form between the coach and other faculty of the school. The best opportunity to arise from this situation is teaching the athletes discipline. More than likely his players will respect him out of fear, which gives an opportunity to teach respect for the coach that can carry over to the classroom and life. On the other hand one threat that could present itself from employing a coach such as this is the negative public image that may be portrayed of the school which could lead to a loss of support. This loss could include a decrease of attendance at the games as well as financial support from alumni and sponsors if they don’t agree with this type of controversial coach.

At the other extreme is the laid back coaching style of Mike. There are many strengths to this situation. One in particular that stands out is building a cohesive team that is led from leadership
