Why Can’t We Be Friends!

What if you could be pulled over while driving for having brown or black hair, wearing a white t-shirt or being suspected of eating a burger that day? That would be quite outrageous for a policeman to pull you over, question you and possibly put you in jail for any of the aforementioned reasons. Well, that is what Hispanics have to endure in Arizona ever since the outrageous ruling of Arizona SB 1080. This 2010 ruling made “the failure to carry immigration documents a crime and [gave] the police broad power to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally” (NY Times). The police could stop someone with no reason, just simply based on one’s potential Hispanic ethnicity. This became known as the most prejudiced immigration regulation in decades. The constant racial profiling and unfairness against immigrants must be discontinued because it takes away from the idea that the United States is a melting pot of different cultures with the Statute of Liberty's welcome call for "the poor, tired and huddled masses". President Obama criticized the harshness of the law, which was significant because presidents rarely give input on state legislation. It is outrageous that a country would act in such a way to a community of people who have come simply looking to make a better life for themselves and their families. One of the biggest arguments made against illegal immigrants by lawmakers is the idea of them stealing jobs. Why would you allow someone to come into your land illegally AND steal money from your economy? The fact of the matter is this: Hispanics do not steal jobs because they do many of the low pay, high effort jobs that Americans do not want.

These arguments are consistent with most arguments against immigrants who come in to our country, even those of Asian and African descent; but quite simply, the United States truly needs these immigrants. These foreigners do live an extremely difficult life as they are always standing out even in the melting pot of the United States. The melting pot of the United States is existent because of these newcomers and the ability of millions of immigrants to join together to create a special mix of culture and ideals. Immigrants “lose the chance to disappear into the majority anywhere
