Final Reflection Paper

What one thing will you do differently when approaching your job search as a result of this class?

One thing that I will do definitely when approaching my job search is always trying to find ways to stand out. This class has showed me how important it is to stand out from the competition. It is not as simple as simply submitting your resume and then waiting for a call back. Throughout this semester, this class has taught me multiple ways I can get noticed while applying for jobs. The first way I can stand out is by having a good first impression. By having an aesthetically appealing resume and cover letter, I can make a solid first impression. Now that employers are interested in reading my resume, I can stand out even further by having powerful bullet points that showcase my accomplishments. Finally, I can follow up with a thank you letter after an interview. This class has changed the way I apply for jobs, because now I am more involved in the process. By finding different ways to stand out in different situations, I can greatly improve my chances of getting an interview and a job offer.

What is your strategy for searching for an internship or job? (Provide a timeline for when you hope to have certain tasks completed as part of your search). How did this class help you search for an internship or job or obtain an internship or job?

When looking for a job or internship I first go to my connections. I start by asking my parents if they have heard of anyone that is hiring. Next I reach out to my friends and close family friends. This strategy has worked every time for me in the past, and it has also led to multiple new connections. Once I learn of a job opportunity, I then contact them about the position. After having a conversation about the details of the job, I then start trying to schedule an interview. If I am successful in getting an interview, I then go through the interview process and wait for a response. I usually hope to have this process done within a month. After submitting a resume, I will wait a week for a call back, until I call the company back myself for a follow up. After the interview I will send a thank you note and then wait a few days for a decision from the company. This class has helped me search for a job by making me reconnect with some of my old connections. Talking to some of my connections from previous years has led to new connections and new opportunities. This class has taught me that you can never have too many connections. When searching for a job this summer, I reached out to the new connections I established over the course of this class. This class also helped me obtain a job, because I greatly improved my resume as a result of this class. With stronger information on my resume, I was able to stand out from other applicants. I was also able to stand out by having experience in writing a cover letter and thank you note. Finally, this class also helped me obtain a job by preparing me for various interview questions. By having a mock interview, and multiple assignments that required me to answer potential interview question, I was prepared for any question during my interview. I am now much more confident before being interviewed, and the employers notice that.
