The Age of Change

The Sixties, a melting pot of American culture that slowly molded and changed life as we know it. This decade was a journey through changes and challenges ranging from putting a man on the moon to undeniable fashions and the emergence of the bell bottom jeans. Some refer to the 60's age the "Age of Love" or the "Flower Power" generation, however there were some very serious changes that occurred during this time.

This generation of post-war children from the baby boomers age was determined to change the conservative way of thinking about education, values, lifestyles, laws and entertainment. The taboos on sex, violence and language were also ignored, which ultimately resulted in the institution of the film rating. I Love Lucy was a popular television show at this time, of course watched on a black and white TV screen.

Futuristic styles of art were explored, along with streamlined contemporary elements. Focus was also emphasized on use of light and space. Andy Warhol appeared on the scene with his now infamous style of Pop Art.

Along with developing new trends in art, there were some serious and fundamental changes for many African-American's at this time. The Civil Rights movement was instrumental in changing the way blacks during this time were treated, and also allowing them the right to vote. Politics were in a constant state of motion during this time, including the assassination of President John Kennedy, Jr. The Vietnam War also started during this time. The first walk on the moon occurred in 1969. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had the privilege of being the first two men to participate in this historic event.

Speaking of history, music was revolutionized during this time period. Rock and Roll became a foundation for many teens and young adults during this time, thus solidifying its place in history forever. Elvis, The Beach Boys
