My Name Essay

My name doesn’t really have the standard translation like most do. It comes from the Greek name Nikolaus and was actually a combination of the two name Nike and Laos. So, it basically has two meanings, combined into one. Nike translates to “victory” while Laos translates to “the people,” which proves Nicholas is supposed to mean “victory the people.” Not your average name meaning in the book – that’s for sure. I asked a bunch of my friends what their names meant and none of them mentioned anything about their names being a combination of two, so I feel like that’s something about me that’s kind of unique, like that one yellow sports car you sometimes see in a parking lot.

But, while I do like it, I’d much rather be called Nick as my full name just sounds too drawn out with its three syllables. Through my ears after hearing it so many times, it’s like a never ending infomercial.  All of my friends call me by my nickname, but back home, I’m always known as Nicholas, which I usually don’t mind as much because it’s the name they’ve been calling me since I was a baby. But, if my parents use my full name to try and reprimand me, it’s like the nagging feeling of having a piece of lettuce in between your teeth.

I’ve really started to like my name after I had some time through school to get used to it, but there was definitely a time where I wished I had a different name. It was just too long, in my opinion, and also just too common as I had about three or four other friends in elementary that were also called Nicholas. It made it a little difficult for the teacher to specify which one of us she wanted, but most of the time, it was pretty funny to see how it played out. Sometimes, some of my friends now will call me by my full name because they know it sounds as if a teacher is a dragging her long nails down a chalk board making the most cringe worthy sound known to man to me. Other times, they might just call me Nicky or Nicole or whatever they can think of to mess with me, but they always expect a similar response back about their name.
