The planetarium was an interesting experience and very informative. It was cool how it was on the ceiling, which made it seem like you were at the sky. When I got there it was in the middle of a movie called “Back to the Moon for Good.” The movie showed us how hard it was to land on the moon, the resources that they found on the moon, and it introduced a contest called the “Google Lunar X Project.” The contest’s main point was to find a cheaper way to get to the moon, so they can use those resources on the moon. I thought it was a cool idea and was amazed how so many people have already joined the contests. After the movie there were short clips of people cheering for the team they were cheering for. Another thing they did was show us where some of the planets were. They showed us where some of the constellations were. They also showed us how it would look if you drew squares around each constellation. I was disappointed that they didn’t show the Leo constellation, because I’m a Leo and I wanted to know where it was. Next they showed us how the moon would look during the eclipse and they explained that the moon was just orbiting into the Earth’s shadow. They said that during the eclipse the moon would look 14% larger than usual, because it is orbiting closer to Earth. Another thing that I learned was that the color of the moon during depended on how clear the Earth’s atmosphere was and that an eclipse last several hours. Then they showed us the point of view of the moon when it was being eclipsed by the Earth. It was a good thing they showed us this because it was too cloudy to see the eclipse anyways. We were then showed a laser light show and regular light show, it kind of looked like something you’d see if you were high. Going to the planetarium made me realize how little we really are and just how big space really is. It also made me think of how far humankind has really come. I wish we could’ve seen the eclipse, but of course this is Alabama so it was too cloudy.
