Case Management Overview

Case managers may have various roles such as; outreach worker, broker, advocate, evaluator, teacher, behavior changer, mobilizer, consultant, community planner, caregiver, data manager, administrator, and assistant to specialist. These roles are broken down into classification systems; Linkage or advocacy of professional for the clients are outreach worker, broker, advocate, and mobilizer. Entering into the treatment and planning for the client is behavior changer, caregiver, and assistant to specialist. The management and administration of human services is evaluator, consultant, community planner, data manager, and administrator. If the client is in need of therapeutic environment the role is teacher or educator (Mehr & Kanwischer,  2011, 2008, 2004).

Roles and Responsibilities

The case managers who assist clients entering, referring to existing services, fight to ensure the clients receive the services they should, and seek out new resources to benefit the clients have various roles and responsibilities.  An outreach worker is a professional goes out to detect those with problems to refer the people to appropriate services, and continues to follow up on their success. For instance; an elderly within a facility the worker would identify the elderly’s need of assistance, and refer to services. Broker is a professional assists clients get existing services, by contacting agencies that offer the services needed and assist the client to gain those services. Advocates are professionals that have the clients back in a sense; they fight for the service the client needs, or policies, rules and regulations, or laws that benefit the client. The advocate may work with an individual or group; they influence other professionals to change for the client needs, or changes in various systems for positive impact for many in need. Mobilizer helps clients with new resources for clients and the community. To be a mobilizer is to initiate new resources, and bring new agencies, groups, and providers for services to create a network (Mehr & Kanwischer,  2011, 2008, 2004).

The professionals who assist the clients in implementing the treatment and planning of services provide numerous advantages to the client. A behavior changer provides services through activities to change client’s behavior with coaching and counseling. For instance; a behavior changer may work with a minor whom have behavior challenges, and the worker will assist the client through coping skills, and activities to change the minor’s behavior.  A caregiver is a professional that provides services to clients that have ongoing needs such as; financial or twenty-four hour care. If an elderly person wishes to remain in the home, but requires twenty-four hour care, a caregiver would provide this service. Assistant to a specialist is someone who does exactly that. The assistant would relieve the specialist of tasks that are burden such as; psychological testing, blood pressures, transporting clients to other agencies.  Such tasks would be an inefficient manner of the specialist time (Mehr & Kanwischer,  2011, 2008, 2004).
